Welcome to Year 5

Here we hope you find everything you need to know about us at Hambleton Primary Academy.

In Year 5 we follow the Key Skills Curriculum which is a very creative approach based on the National Curriculum which makes sure the children learn and develop skills appropriate for their year group. We will be working hard to develop our existing skills as well as learning lots of new and exciting things this year too! We ensure every lesson meets the needs of the whole class and endeavour that each child succeeds through an adaptive learning process. This enables all learners to achieve their objectives, adaptive strategies. We also use ‘Challenge Time’ which further challenges children after they have finished any given work.

Throughout this year we will cover ‘Fights for Rights’, ‘Amazing Anglo Saxons’ and ‘Tales from the East’. We provide a broad and engaging curriculum which is based on the children’s interests and ways of learning which sees all children achieving the best they can. We ensure lessons are engaging and foster a love for learning, cross-curricular learning is at the heart of all our topics and we ensure a relevant link is made to all subjects possible. We also guarantee a progression of skills taught from Year 5 to Year 6 and monitor this to inform future planning. During this year we will promote your Year 5 child’s love of learning, independence, and curiosity. We do this through our teaching but also through our Multi-Academy Trust’s motto of ‘Be the best you can be’. We also follow the Academy Trust’s core values of Pride, Ambition, Resilience, Respect, Integrity and Excellence, all of which are incorporated into every lesson. Throughout the year we will also have Entitlement Experiences to further our skills and understanding of the wider world past the school walls. These will be documented on our school’s Facebook page with photos uploaded as and when they happen. They will also show a set of progressive skills from Nursery all the way to Year 6.
Year 5 is the beginning of Upper Key Stage 2 with much of the knowledge they accumulate preparing them for SATs at the end of Key Stage 2. However, we ensure all lessons are always creative, engaging and challenging to prepare children for this. Progress is regularly monitored by myself, Miss Riches and Mrs Wood, the Headteacher. After discussions with you as the parents, intervention is put in place to support the child as needed. We are inclusive and are always here to support your child grow and enjoy their learning as well as ensuring they are achieving the most at home too. Homework is simple, just learn your spellings, tables and read! We also have our ‘Project on a Page’, which is topic based and should be returned at the end of term. Resource packs may be sent home throughout the year to help target or challenge your child’s areas of learning whether it be in reading, writing or their maths abilities. P.E is every Thursday in Year 5; please make sure your child comes to school in the full and correct P.E in kit school. Coloured house t-shirts can be bought from our school office. We also have swimming on a Friday and we are split into two groups, with one group swimming for half a year and other group engaging in Forest School sessions with me!

Finally, always keep your eye out on the school Facebook page for updated photos and information on our learning journey through Year 5 for 2023/2024. We look forward to supporting and encouraging your child’s amazing learning this year as well as being there for home support if needed.

Thank you and here is to an amazing year,

Mr Goldie and Mrs Parkinson
